90.3 WMSC-FM, “THE VOICE OF MONTCLAIR STATE”
CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY WITH 100-HOUR LIVE MARATHON

MONTCLAIR, NJ (April, 7, 2017) — In celebration of its 50th anniversary, 90.3 WMSC- FM “The Voice of Montclair State,” will be broadcasting 100 hours of live event programming beginning at 7 PM on April 16 and ending on April 21.

Montclair State alumnus Tom Kaminski (Class of 1984), WCBS Chopper 880 reporter, will kick off the festivities at 7pm on Sunday April 16 with a special edition of its regularly scheduled “The Back to the Future Show.”

“Montclair State University and WMSC provided the foundation for my 30-year radio career, and I’m honored to kick off our 100-hour marathon to celebrate 50 years of this amazing radio station,” said Kaminski.

During the opening program, WMSC founder Ed Helvey will join Kaminski to discuss the beginning of the station, then known as WVMS (The Voice of Montclair State), and how his dream to connect commuter students has grown ever since.

“It’s humbling to know my dream has ultimately impacted millions of people, including students, listeners and especially those who went on to careers in broadcasting,” said Helvey, who founded the station.  “I was only the spark that ignited the fuse. Credit must go to the more than one-thousand students over the past half century who were inspired by my dream and carried it forward to what WMSC has become 50 years later.”

The marathon celebration will showcase 47 unique programs hosted by over 60 current students and alumni DJs, special interviews and performances, old favorites and new favorite shows, in hopes of bringing greater awareness to the original content produced by students at Montclair State University.

“I wanted to put together 100 hours of live programming featuring the best we can offer because our staff enjoys rallying up for events such as this and what bigger occasion than our 50th Anniversary,” said Juan Contla, the current student station manager for WMSC. “The diverse program selection mirrors the big melting pot of DJs that have come through the station and those who are here now learning this great profession.”

WMSC’s program lineup this academic year has been a yearlong celebration, beginning with a fall semester kick off concert featuring local bands during “Welcome Week” and interviews with on campus organizations, faculty and administration. The 50th anniversary was also a campus highlight of College Radio Day programming highlighted by an exclusive interview with Helvey, a documentary about the past, present and future of WMSC, a series of concerts and roundtables featuring the various departments that make WMSC and DJ swaps with other college stations in our state.

As part of this milestone celebration, WMSC will be hosting studio open houses in Schmitt Hall Room 386 from Monday April 17 through Thursday, April 20, between 10AM to 3PM.  Tours of the station will be given, and visitors will have the opportunity to go live on air. Additionally, students will be able to enter contests to win station merchandise and concert tickets. Listeners are invited to participate and join the celebration by calling the studio hotline at 973-655-4256 and join the conversations on the station’s social media platforms, using the hashtag #WMSC50th.

WMSC broadcasts on the iHeartRadio App, online at wmscradio.com and on the dial at 90.3 FM.
