Frost Children’s Tweaker Poem Is 24 Hours of Sleep Deprived Brilliance

Some albums take years to make. Tweaker Poem took a day.
Frost Children, the sibling duo of Angel and Lulu Prost, wrote and recorded their new EP in a single sleep deprived 24 hour session in Tokyo on January 2nd, after fleeing New York City when they discovered they were being stalked. The songs appear on the tracklist in the exact order they were made, from morning until the next morning. It’s a concept that could easily read as a gimmick. Instead, it might be the most Frost Children thing they have ever done.
The EP describes itself as a soundtrack to psychotic obsession, sympathizing with what the duo calls the tweaker: the possessive, laser-focused lover-weirdo too obsessed with maintaining a private fantasy to invest in reality. And you can hear that unhinged devotion all over these six tracks.
Opener and lead single “Satellites” sets the tone immediately, and the Tokyo of it all is impossible to miss. The track sounds like it came straight out of a Dance Dance Revolution machine, all rapid-fire energy and bright arcade lights. Knowing where this EP was made, it makes perfect sense. The city bled directly into the music.
“Creep” pulls things back into more familiar territory, classic melodic and upbeat Frost Children with sparkling clean production. Then “Afterlife” takes a hard left into one of the most interesting moments on the project: hyperpop colliding with 2017 Goth Boy Clique era trap. The hook is instantly catchy, and the verses carry a distinct Lil Peep and Jane Remover influence. It might be the most Jane Remover song Frost Children has ever made, and that is a compliment.
The back half keeps experimenting. “Light Leak” swings toward electropop, anchored by an absolutely insane synth melody that serves as the hook itself, landing somewhere between Frost Children and the 2014-era Chainsmokers. “Gutted” slows the momentum somewhat, one of the quieter moments on a project that thrives at full speed. But closer “Faster” ends things exactly where they should end: on the dance floor. Built on the classic Frost Children club formula, the track has an almost Vocaloid quality to it, like Hatsune Miku wandered into the session at hour 23. Given the circumstances, maybe she did.
Tweaker Poem is chaotic, hyper specific, and deeply weird in the way only Frost Children can be. For a project born out of genuine fear and isolation, it is remarkable how much fun it is. These are, as the duo puts it, hymns for lovers who hypnotize themselves with faith when the world seems to frown at them. Somehow, they made that sound like a party.
Tweaker Poem is out now via RCA Records. Frost Children headline their sold out FROST FEST at Knockdown Center in Queens on July 25th.
