Dr. K, aka Montclair State University President Jonathan Koppell, treated our listeners to an unannounced 90-minute live vinyl DJ set this week, where he played 70’s funk, 80’s rock n’ pop, and one-hit wonders from a collection of vinyl he rescued from “certain doom” and shipped to WMSC where it would be kept safe.
Dressed in black and white paisley bell-bottom pants and a multicolor paisley shirt, a gray fedora hat with a feather, sunglasses, and an MSU mask, our illustrious host arrived to the station accompanied by his teenage daughter Elsa to the sound of “Give Up the Funk” by Parliament.
“I’m dealing with excitement and embarrassment at the same time,” she told WMSC’s Kenny Horn during the show. “So I’m appalled by my father’s fashion choices but also admire his confidence in pulling them off.”

The chemistry between father-daughter was palpable and it was evident that Dr. K mentored young “Princess Von Funk” in the ways of good music, as she sang along while mastering the art of spinning vinyl in our DJ mixer.
