Noah Kahan became the next artist to release music for The Hunger Games franchise with the song “Draw You Out.” The song serves as the lead single for the soundtrack of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping which is set to hit theaters on November 20.
This opportunity is an honor as several prominent artists including Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo have written songs for other movies in the franchise. For Kahan, he is not only joining that list but it is also the first song that he has written for a movie soundtrack.
The upcoming movieis centered around Haymitch Abernathy and his experiences when he was younger. “I was already totally connected and inspired by the tragic yet hopeful story of Haymitch and Lenore Dove…,” Kahan wrote in an Instagram post, proving this was essentially what the song revolved around.
For this production, Kahan reunited with Aaron Dessner, who is a member of The National and has helped several other artists as a producer and co-writer. Most recently, Dessner worked with Kahan on his most recent album, The Great Divide, which was released in April 2026.
The song begins with an immediate vocal melody from Kahan that is uplifting and energetic. Oddly enough, I actually felt like it would be the perfect music to listen to while watching the sun ascend over an ocean. Soon after, he starts with a passionate, emotional chorus with slight guitar strumming over the melody in the background.
The lyrics in the chorus revolve around a reminiscence with the theme of holding someone’s memories and keeping them close although they are no longer there. For the subject, remembering everything about the person is a way for them to still feel connected.
In the first verse, Kahan adapts a storytelling approach and while it all rhythmically flows, it sounds as if he is talking in a melancholy tone. For those familiar with The Hunger Games, the lyrics also seem carefully written in order to fit the experiences of Abernathy and the nature of the films. Pair that together, the song has a powerful effect because it can make others feel empathetic, with each word clearly heard and understood.
While listening, I also could not help but notice a connection between this song and another song Kahan has previously released. As part of The Great Divide, Kahan’s song “Lighthouse” explores similar themes, with the main focus on the desire to keep someone’s memories. In that song he expresses anger when others attempt to erase someone’s belongings, and stands up for them in an attempt to avoid this from happening. Similarly, in “Draw You Out,” the focus is on vowing to keep someone’s memory alive no matter what.
One thing that I found atypical about the structure of the song was that it was missing a distinct bridge, something that Kahan tends to include in his music. Instead, the chorus serves as more of a passionate expression of feelings while the verses have more of a somber undertone, which in turn complement each other well.
“Draw You Out” strongly symbolizes the desire to remember someone you lost and keep their memories with you. The melody of the song is mellow with the lyrics in the chorus being accentuated which allows Kahan to express raw emotions, conveying the personality and revealing the experiences of Haymitch Abernathy.
