Looking at Love from Both Sides: A Review of Olivia Rodrigo’s Third Album

The most anticipated album release this summer, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, by Olivia Rodrigo with contributions from Dan Nigro, Amy Allen, Sasha Alex Sloan, and Steph Jones; along with a feature with Robert Smith, singer from the iconic band, The Cure, has officially been released. It has 13 tracks, each reflecting the euphoria of falling in love while also dealing with a sense of anxiety, doubt, and personal issues that affect romantic relationships. You seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, is Olivia Rodrigo’s third studio album following, Sour and Guts.

The moment Rodrigo started promotion for this album, I was expecting a heart wrenching, sad girl kind of vibe – much like her previous albums. This new album is SO different from what we’re used to hearing from her, in terms of composition. Rodrigo definitely stepped out of her comfort zone a little bit for this one and did an incredible job. From what I can tell, the entire album has some influence from The Cure, Talking Heads, and early 2000s punk-rock girl while also having her own influence on most of the songs like, “Stupid Song,” “Honeybee,” “The Cure,” and “Begged.” The majority of the songs on this album are composed in a way that would be PERFECT to dance to in a club; everyone’s dancing with lots of colorful lights filling the room.

As mentioned previously, I was expecting a heart wrenching, sad-girl album. Although the entire album isn’t like that, there are definitely some hard hitting songs in there. Rodrigo has never failed when it comes to making me sad and I love her music for so many reasons. They’ve always related to my relationship experiences at the moment. This album was released at the perfect, almost ironic time in my life. I’ve been a huge fan of Rodrigo’s work since her days on Bizaardvark, so you already know the SECOND this album was released I listened to it.
