Montclair, NJ. July 19, 2022 — WMSC Earns Fourth Marconi Radio Awards Nomination for College Radio Station of the Year

WMSC 90.3 FM, the official student radio station of Montclair State University, has been named a finalist for the 2022 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Marconi Radio Awards.

Another major milestone, the nomination marks the fourth finalist nod for WMSC. It recognizes the station’s 2021 highlights and achievements, and highlights its presence in innovative programming, station reach, commitment to its community, and unique challenges posed within the academic year.

Recipients of the NAB Marconi Radio Awards will be announced during the NAB Show in New York, held October 19 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Other finalists include WGLS-FM (Rowan University), WHPC-FM (Nassau Community College), WRHU-FM (Hofstra University), and WRRC-FM (Rider University).

WMSC was previously nominated for “Best Non-Commercial Station of the Year” in 2017, and “College Radio Station of the Year” in 2019 and 2021.

“College radio is just as much about each individual student’s journey as it is about programming and elevating underrepresented voices,” says Anabella Poland, WMSC general manager and faculty advisor. “I am elated that WMSC continues to consistently deliver outstanding opportunities for students to grow in this medium, as well as the innovative programming that has led to a fourth Marconi nomination. ”

Already an award-winning station, WMSC received the 2021 World College Radio Day Global Marathon Award for “Best Audio Production” along with 13 nominations for the Intercollegiate Broadcast System (IBS) Awards. The station also took home seven national college awards from College Broadcasters, Inc. (CBI), with first place honors for “Best Audio Broadcast” (World College Radio Day) and “Best Video Comedy” (“We’ll Be Back”).

Student directors reflected on what the nomination means to them and their experience at the station.

“College radio has been a second home to many of the DJs and general members. This platform has amplified underrepresented voices and sparked genuine memories for all of its members,” says Station Manager Ben Petruk. “A nomination like this is humbling and a privilege, and we are all extremely grateful. We are also very glad to be in the company of such prestigious radio stations and the Marconi Award Society.”

“I’m so proud of this brilliant team and our passion for radio, driving us to work together even when things get rough. I’m forever grateful for this nomination,” said Program Director Leslie Gallagher.

“WMSC has been around since ’67, so being a part of it at the height of its success after this many years is a privilege. What feels so great about the current moment at WMSC is the profound pride and love that everyone has for each other here,” says Music Director Jared Tauber. The triumphs of our friends is the triumph of the whole, and we love to give each other reasons to celebrate — whether it’s a nomination or our website simply continuing to be online. Thank you, Marconi’s, for giving us one more.”
