MONTCLAIR, N.J. April 20th, 2023 – Montclair State University’s WMSC 90.3 FM is celebrating Vinylthon and Record Store Day with a 48-hour weekend long, vinyl-only music live broadcast.

The special event will start Saturday, April 22 at midnight and it will showcase the best WMSC shows – with some old, some new, but all vinyl.

General Manager Anabella Poland who has been the professional advisor to the station since 2015 reflects on the importance of students learning how to play music from a physical album.

“In a digital world, with touchscreens and smart assistants that can find a songs in seconds, Montclair students who participate in Vinylthon will have the old-school, tactile DJ experience with actual records, finding the groove where the song starts, and they may even get to do some record scrubbing,” said Poland. “It is all part of their journey as DJs.”

Student station manager Ben Petruk led the team of students in preparation for the big celebration. “There is nothing more infectious than everybody coming together to share their music. I always believe that somebody discovers a new band or song through this event. The community, comradery, and overall experience brings the spring semester to a climax.”

WMSC DJ’s Victor Muñis Rosa, Yak Ferstenberg and Lara Ziccardi.

The live programming event begins with the Kickoff Spectacular hosted by Music Director Jared Tauber and Phil Oshinsky.

Show highlights include:

Dr. K’s Vinyl Fantasy Funhouse MSU’s funkiest funklord, Dr. K, who holds a PhD in Funkology and his sidekick DJ Doctor DJ return to WMSC featuring the most dance-like-no-one-is-watching tunes ever. Dr. K is university president Jonathan Koppell’s alter ego who has a passion for all things funk and paisley prints.
