WMSC ANNOUNCES 30-HOUR LIVE MARATHON FOR 2018 COLLEGE RADIO DAY
WMSC FM, Montclair State University’s campus radio station, announced today a 30-hour marathon of live programming in honor of College Radio Day (CRD), Friday, October 5th 2018.
The award-winning, student-operated station will unite with hundreds of college radio stations around the world in an event that aims to raise greater awareness of student-produced content and programming in hopes to attract new listenership.
The 2018 College Radio Day theme is “When All Else Fails, College Radio Speaks,” highlighting how students cover stories otherwise not widely covered by mainstream media.
“College radio has greater freedom of choice when selecting which stories to cover out of the news cycle, which results in unique and diverse programming,” said Anabella Poland, general manager of WMSC “A big part of my mentorship is helping students find their voice, find a new angle and to think out-of-the-box.”
Students agree this approach is far more rewarding as they take their first few steps into broadcast media.
“Personally, I have learned everything about news reporting for radio right here at WMSC! I learned how to find stories, write newscasts, research stories and find new angles” said student station manager Kate Braunstein. “Despite what seems a repetitive news cycle, we produce a lot of content you don’t hear anywhere else”.
Just in the last few months, WMSC has done special reports on net neutrality, sexual assault on campus. Autism and the arts, veterans and the arts, race on campus, gun violence in New Jersey, talked to Vice President Joe Biden, Joan Jett & Kenny Laguna and Montclair State’s own super star marine biologist, Dr. Paul Bologna, about clinging jellyfish, just to name a few. WMSC’s CRD 2018 includes special editions of the stations’ popular shows, featuring exclusive interviews and celebrity shout outs, CRD Simulcast and eight hours of back-to-back performances by local bands and artists.
