On Friday, August 16th at The Avenel Performing Arts Center LaKisha Jones performed the show To Whitney, with Love and luckily I was there to see it. LaKisha Jones is most notibly known for her appearance on the 2007 American Idol which after coming in fourth place she toured on the Idols tour and then later joined the Broadway cast of The Color Purple. Now in her show To Whitney, with Love she pays homage to singer Whitney Houston by singing her songs as well as artists that have inspired Whitney and herself.
When Jones first came out she came into the audience shaking people’s hands, that is one of the perks of The Avenel Performing Arts Center, it isn’t a big venue so it gives you the opprotunity to attend intimate shows where you can interact with the performer during or after the show. On stage she had a band and background singers because when you are belting out Whitney for around 2 hours you need some vocal support to ease your own voice. When Jones performed she sounded sort of like Whitney and though she wasn’t intending to and of course with it in mind no one can ever replace Whitney Houston, her performance was still incredible. Toward the end of the show she got the crowd to stand up and she also went into the audience singing and dancing with them. Everyone had a good time and were excited for the opportunity to meet her after the show, Jones is an incredibly humble person and I can’t wait to see more shows at The Avenel Performing Arts Center!
