A new school year brings many changes. Different classes, fresh faces around campus, and most importantly a new football season. Montclair State exceeded even the loftiest of expectations this past season, finishing with an 8-2 record and competing for an NJAC championship, although they did fall just short. Even without grabbing that elusive trophy the team was able to do what many struggle with, finding an identity.

Quarterback JaQuill Burch took the reins as the leader of the offense in week one and didn’t look back, giving the Red Hawks a sense of stability that they haven’t had in some time. Burch brings with him a cannon arm and the ability to escape pressure while still being able to spread the ball around to the rest of the offense.

Heading into his junior year Burch looks to take another step forward along with the rest of the team in hopes of finishing atop the NJAC. With powerhouse Frostburg State transitioning into Division II, there is a chance for the Red Hawks to move up the ranks quickly. The combination of deep throws and ground and pound offense they bring with the hard nosed defense is what makes Montclair State such a dangerous team heading into the new season.

With head coach Rick Giancola back for his 38th season expectations will once again be sky high. With all of the talent that this coaching staff will be working with this year there is no reason why the Red Hawks can’t reach those goals in the upcoming year.
