MONTCLAIR, NJ – In celebration of Hispanic Serving Institutions Week, Comcast Xfinity partnered with Montclair’s Office of Hispanic Initiatives to bring a pop-up exhibit for students on Monday, September 9.
Xfinity is an American telecommunications business segment and is a division of the Comcast Corporation. As a part of their 2024 Unity tour, Xfinity is visiting 13 Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) all over the country. Montclair State University was the first HSI university Xfinity visited as part of their 2024 tour.
The goal of the event is to connect students to career resources and tools, Black and Hispanic small business owners and entrepreneurs and culturally relevant content and media.
Hispanic Serving Institutions are any not-for-profit higher educational institutions whose full-time undergraduate enrollment is Hispanic by at least 25%, according to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.
“It was a really good experience to have during Hispanic Heritage Month because I feel like with Hispanic serving institutions you don’t get to see pop-ups for our people so I’m glad there’s more appreciation for our culture,” said senior Allison Chacon.
Zabdi Medel, who works in community programs for the Office of Hispanic Initiatives in the Office of the Provost says that students can look forward to tons of other events that will be held throughout September in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
“It’s really to show that it’s a celebration not only just for the Hispanic Latinos but for all the cultures to see and learn a little bit more about us and what we could represent here at Montclair,” said Medel.
