NEW YORK CITY, NY— Comic Con Day 4 featured an exclusive panel with Hiroyuki Watanabe, manga editor of “Neon Genesis Evangelion” and “Sgt. Frog”. During this panel, Watanabe offered some statistics on manga publishing as well as some insight as to what makes an interesting manga.

According to Watanabe, the average manga-ka debuts between 22-23 years old. For one paperback sold, the average manga-ka makes the U.S. equivalent of 50 yen, which is 40 cents.

He offered advice to the audience with one main sentiment: to keep drawing, “It might be a little boring to say this but just keep trying…keep going”. He emphasized that it was better to draw, even if it was a small drawing. He also assessed the strengths of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the creator of “Neon Genesis: Evangelion”. He mentioned that Sadamoto has a duality of strengths based on his background in animation and in manga as a whole.

Some audience members were able to have their portfolios reviewed by Watanabe, giving them an opportunity to receive direct feedback from someone already in the industry.
