For the first time in over a decade, the famous Japanese monster movie studio is releasing an officially licensed Godzilla movie with a new breath to the franchise. Godzilla has previously been licensed by the Legendary film company for the past few years, making this the first movie we see the big lizard in a new japanese movie. Minus 1 is a new take on the Godzilla origin story, as multiple versions of the origin story have been made throughout the filmography starting with Gojira (1954), Godzilla Returns (1989), Godzilla (2000), Godzilla (2014) and Shin Godzilla (2016). Each time they regenerate the franchise, a new Godzilla origin movie is made to introduce a new audience to the iconic monster.
This film is to be centered on the titular lizard, as many references to the original 1954 film is to be expected, as it is rumored to be a complete remake of the iconic monster movie. The plotline for Godzilla Minus 1 will feature how the monster came to being in Japan and how destructive the monster becomes as the film goes on.
Judging from the trailer, the film has a much darker and somber tone to it, whereas the 1954 movie was dark, but it did not go to the lengths of showing the masses of carnage the monster creates. Instead of being the hero and fighting for Japan, the film will see Godzila return as the main antagonist once again. The new Godzilla movie is set to release in theaters on December 1st 2023 in the United States, exposing a whole new generation of fans and possibly a new line of movies to come from the Toho studio.
