Silverstein Turns the Stone Pony Summer Stage into One Giant Pit

Silverstein took the stage at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park on July 12th, and the mosh pit that formed over the next hour stretched the length of the venue. By the set’s peak it had swallowed more ground than the stage itself, sending waves of crowd surfers toward the barricade that never really let up.
The band opened with “Negative Space” and “Drain the Blood,” and the room was already loud before “Smashed Into Pieces” hit. “Your Sword Versus My Dagger” and “I Am the Arsonist” kept the pace climbing, the kind of early stretch that tells you the rest of the night is going to be a lot.
The real spectacle was the staging. Drummer Paul Koehler played the whole set from an inverted half-pipe riser, a strange bit of stagecraft that somehow made complete sense once the lighting kicked in during “The Afterglow” and “Stress.” Between songs, Shane Told took a minute to settle two long-running debates from the mic: pork roll over Taylor ham, and Wawa over every other convenience store in the state. The crowd’s response left no doubt where Asbury Park stands on either one.
“Infinite” and “Bankrupt” carried the momentum into the back half, and by “Bad Habits” the pit had stopped being a pit and become the whole floor of the venue, bigger than the stage the band was playing from. “Retrograde” and “The Altar/Mary” kept that energy from dropping off.
“My Heroine” and “Smile in Your Sleep” slowed things down just enough to catch a breath before “Bleeds No More” closed out the set. The band looked like they were having as good a time as everyone in front of them, vocals locked in the whole way through.
Two familiar faces, Pooh Bear and Banana Guy, were spotted in their usual spots in the crowd. If you know, you know.
By the last song, the crowd had taken up more of the Stone Pony than the band ever did.
