Girlpool Review

On Thursday, April 25 I saw Girlpool at The Bowery Ballroom. This was my first time seeing Girlpool and my first show at The Bowery Ballroom. The venue was really nice with a lot of space to move around, but still intimate enough that the artists felt very close. The show had two openers, Gemma and Hatchie. Gemma went on first and was a nice way to start things off. The lead singer had a great stage presence and danced around a lot. I didn’t like Hatchie much because lot of their songs sounded the same and they didn’t have much energy, but they were still pleasant as a way to build up the anticipation.
Before Girlpool even started performing, the two main members of the band, Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad walked out individually to tune their guitars, taking time to fist bump fans or dance around onstage. Once they both came out together along with their touring members they kicked off their performance with full energy. Tucker and Tividad’s dynamic was great, both of them beaming like children to be playing music together. I also loved how much both members moved around on stage instead of just staying in the same spot. I was a bit disappointed that they mostly stuck to their newest album because I wasn’t a big fan of it, but their new songs were much more appealing with the live energy behind them. Even though they didn’t play many of my favorite older tracks, I left the show wanting to see them again because their concert energy was so good.
