As the generation who grew up with the beloved characters of Harry Potter, we grieve with the world one of the most unique and creative actors in the industry. British thespian Alan Rickman, died today at age 69.

His deep, purr of a voice, one of the best in film. His characters, often villainous, displayed a complex level of emotions and motivations. It was these multifaceted roles that gained him the most recognition.

One of those most esteemed characters was Hogwarts’ spells and potions professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series. Though sarcastic and villainous throughout the first seven films, the last installment revealed the full arc and ultimate redemption of Snape.

Many of the people who worked with Rickman on Harry Potter had nothing, but kind words for the actor after working on 8 films together.

We at WMSC choose to celebrate Alan Rickman with our favorite quotes by him in and out of character.

“Actors are agents of change. A film, a piece of theater, a piece of music, or a book can make a difference. It can change the world.” -Alan Rickman (Francesca LaBianco)

“The more we’re governed by idiots and have no control over our destinies, the more we need to tell stories to each other about who we are, why we are, where we come from, and what might be possible. Or, what’s impossible? What’s a fantasy?” -Alan Rickman (Jose Cortez)

“I want to swim in both directions at once. Desire success, court failure.” -Alan Rickman (Anabella Poland)

“I don’t remember it now, but I’m sure the difficult moments made me stronger, or at least that’s what I’ve trained myself to think. “– Alan Rickman (Natalie Caamano)

“ I don’t play villains, I play very interesting people.” – Alan Rickman (Melissa Donofrio)

“I think there’s some connection between absolute discipline and absolute freedom. ” – Alan Rickman (Anabella Poland)

“You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion-making. As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic. I don’t expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses. . . I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death — if you aren’t as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach.”– Alan Rickman as Severus Snape. “Sorcerer’s Stone” (Sam Romano)

General Manager- Anabella Poland got to work with Rickman on several opportunities including the Harry Potter films for Good Morning America and SiriusXM.

“I am heartbroken. Alan was a quiet, shy soul who was beyond kind! He was a gifted actor who gave his characters immense depth. Alan made me love the villains he portrayed and root for them. I will miss him deeply!”
