Marvel and Netflix seem to know exactly how to get the world’s attention, and their mastery of timing was perfection at New York Comic Con Day 3. Tonight’s main stage panel was for Netflix and Marvel’s new series Iron Fist, which will be stream-able starting March 17, 2017. Shocking surprises delivered huge news, including that Sigourney Weaver will be playing the villain on the 2017 Netflix and Marvel series The Defenders. Here’s a quick recap of the events of the panel.
The cast, crew, and writer/showrunner of Iron Fist attended the panel tonight after wrapping production on season one at 9 am this morning. Cast members Finn Jones (Danny Rand), Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing), David Wenham (Harold Meachum), Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple), Tom Pelphrey (Ward Meachum), Jessica Stroup (Joy Meachum), and writer/showrunner David Buck sat on the panel to reveal information on season one. They also unveiled five clips to the audience and the first trailer, which should be made public shortly. The show looks amazing from the first look – very action packed, lots of great martial arts, and a simple new hero.
After the Iron Fist extravaganza finished, Jon Bernthal came out on stage to announce that production on The Punisher started last Monday, October 3rd. The show is slated to appear on Netflix in 2017. Bernthal also officially announced that his partner-in-crime will be back for the show. That’s right, Deborah Ann Woll will bring Karen Page to The Punisher! She came out on stage to a huge round of applause.
Prior to the Iron Fist cast hitting the stage, Erik LaRay Harvey took the stage to be introduced as Diamondback on Luke Cage for the first time. He said that his casting and character had to be kept a secret to ensure that no spoilers would get out. He also shared a clip from the show of Diamondback’s introduction scene. Even though it is already stream-able on Netflix, it was fun to watch some bloody violence.
The biggest surprise and news of the night was when Bernthal and Woll left the stage and all of the Defenders walked out. Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), and Jones (Iron Fist) walked out together for the first time. The villain for the show was also introduced, and somehow Marvel and Netflix have casted the legendary actress Sigourney Weaver to play the role of the unknown villain. To say that the crowd went nuts is an understatement, and my ears are still ringing from the chaos that ensued when Weaver took the stage. People were chanting and shocked by the exciting news and the fact that all their favorite characters were standing on stage in front of them. It was super thrilling, but the real question is who will Weaver play? This should be answered closer to the show’s release sometime in 2017.
