Alumni Takeover Week On WMSC

Written by on May 4, 2017

MONTCLAIR, NJ. – May 4, 2017 – 90.3 WMSC-FM Ninth Annual Alumni Takeover Week starts Thursday May 4th, 2017. Tom Kaminski from WCBS 880, MSU class of ‘84, and one of the hosts of the ‘Back To The Future’ show, is organizing the week-long live programming event with his co-host Gene Sower, Class of ‘80 and Anthony Mennutti, Class of ‘00.

The WMSC “Alumni Takeover” began in 2009 after Montclair State University’s WMSC alumni approached the station’s management seeking to take over the station the week of Spring finals, relieving undergraduate student DJs from their show schedule. Management agreed.

“It is radio’s homecoming! said Anabella Poland, General Manager of the campus station. “It gives our undergraduate students a chance to connect and network with alumni some of whom started their radio career right here. It also gives our graduates the opportunity to mentor the new generation of DJs”.

Every year since then, Tom Kaminski, Gene Sower and Anthony Mennutti lead the recruitment of alum DJs via social media and an email blast.

“Montclair State University and WMSC provided the foundation for my 30-year radio career in radio and it is a privilege to be back on their air and pay it forward by spending time with students who love the medium” said Kaminski.

Now in its ninth year, the “Takeover” has brought alumni from around the country back to their alma mater and back to the airwaves of WMSC, including WCBS 880’s Tom Kaminski, WKXW 101.5’s Bob Williams and Westwood One’s Jana Polsky Deneroff.

“The memories alumni share from back in the day, always remind us why we joined WMSC in the first place”, said Juan Contla, Station Manager and MSU Class of 2017. “The career stories they share, are a reminder of where this path can take us.”
